I got to see the tulips! After several false starts, I got to Ottawa on THE weekend, and the sun was shining!<\/p>\n<p>I took a city tour to refresh my memory and learned an awful lot of useless information&#8230;.and some&#8230; more interesting such as the fact that every year the Dutch government sends 10,000 new tulip bulbs to Ottawa.\u00a0 This is to thank Canada for welcoming princess Julianna and her children during the war.<\/p>\n<p>They are spectacular both in their variety and their number.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottbeaucouprose.jpg\" title=\"ottbeaucouprose.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottbeaucouprose.jpg\" alt=\"ottbeaucouprose.jpg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottbeaucoup.jpg\" title=\"ottbeaucoup.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottbeaucoup.jpg\" alt=\"ottbeaucoup.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were simple delicate varieties:<\/p>\n<p>.<a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottdelicate.jpg\" title=\"ottdelicate.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottdelicate.jpg\" alt=\"ottdelicate.jpg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottdelicate2.jpg\" title=\"ottdelicate2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottdelicate2.jpg\" alt=\"ottdelicate2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Others are intricate and fancy:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottpoilue.jpg\" title=\"ottpoilue.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottpoilue.jpg\" alt=\"ottpoilue.jpg\" \/><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottpoilue2.jpg\" title=\"ottpoilue2.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottpoilue2.jpg\" alt=\"ottpoilue2.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ott3couleur.jpg\" title=\"ott3couleur.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ott3couleur.jpg\" alt=\"ott3couleur.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>These had pointy petals and were turned towards the sun like sunflowers&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottpointue.jpg\" title=\"ottpointue.jpg\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottpointue.jpg\" alt=\"ottpointue.jpg\" height=\"304\" width=\"404\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course this would not say Ottawa without the Parliament buiding&#8230;and the Canadian flag on top of the peace tower.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ott1.jpg\" title=\"ott1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ott1.jpg\" alt=\"ott1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are several statues and monuments on the grounds, as befits\u00a0 any capital&#8230;.\u00a0 But this one caught my eye&#8230;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottfem1.jpg\" title=\"ottfem1.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottfem1.jpg\" alt=\"ottfem1.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Another landmarks,\u00a0 the Museum of Civilization,was, as always, an amazing visit. There were hundreds of people lined up for tickets&#8230;I was lucky and avoided the lineups by seeing 2 IMAX films, the first one, an underwater film was very nice,\u00a0\u00a0 but the second was a huge disappointment. Called Mummies it was a silly re-enactment that taught you nothing about Egyptian mumies.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ott5.jpg\" title=\"ott5.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ott5.jpg\" alt=\"ott5.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I learn something new about the war museum: the windows in the dark part of the building,\u00a0 are shaped and placed to form a Morse code message that spells out both in french and in english: Lest we forget&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>At 11 a.m., each November 11, the sun shines through the window of the Museum&#8217;s Memorial Hall and illuminates the only artifact in that space: the headstone of Canada&#8217;s Unknown Soldier.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ott4.jpg\" title=\"ott4.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ott4.jpg\" alt=\"ott4.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On the way back from Washington I had been amused to see the image of my car on the edge of water on the GPS&#8230;but check this out!!!!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottferry.jpg\" title=\"ottferry.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/05\/ottferry.jpg\" alt=\"ottferry.jpg\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had been following the instructions blindly&#8230; totally lost (once again!) when Daniel (that&#8217;s the british english voice)\u00a0 ordered me to: &#8220;turn left and board ferry&#8221;!!!!! A ferry???? What the ****??? I&#8217;ve never taken a ferry to get to or from Ottawa before&#8230; Ohh well&#8230; it was different&#8230;and I did make it home&#8230;eventually!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Finally!!!
