This restaurant is on the corner of St Urbain street but further north than Richler’s domain. It is actually on Fleury street…but again, not even in the busy commercial area. It is in a quiet residential area.

So this puts it in the category of neighborhood eateries…BUT it stands out. Mostly because of the food and the wine they serve. Also because the staff is very knowledgeable and smart as well as efficient.

The room is large and bare, yet it is not cold nor noisy. One entire wall is occupied by a huge blackboard listing the 6 appetizers and 6 entrees as well as an impressive wine selection.

I started with a veal cheek in a caramelized onion sauce which was delicious although more a winter dish than a summer one. I followed with salmon which was not quite cooked enough but looked very nice.

Dessert was a plate of swirling beignets (churros) with a salt flower caramel…THAT was to my liking….I had always had those with powdered sugar but having this caramel to dip into was a nice treat.

I got a good vibe from this place, the other patrons were ordinary people enjoying a nice meal in a discrete quiet way.

This is unpretentious and very pleasant.

http://www.lesturbain.com/

Anyone who knows of Mordecai Richler, knows of his book titled “St Urbain’s Horseman”.
