It was held by several ancient cultures including Sicilians, Romans, Phoenicians, Byzantines and others. The island is commonly associated with the Knights of St. John who ruled it. This, along with the historic Biblical shipwreck of St. Paul on the island, ingrained a strong Roman Catholic legacy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I could not tell what their flag was because there was a variety of flags everywhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-423.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4142\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-423.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-423-300x200.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Our tour took us first to the fishing village of Marsaxlokk. It was early and very quiet still.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-425.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4145\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-425.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-425-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>We had been told to look out for the \u201ceye\u201d on the fishing boats.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Called&nbsp;<strong>luzzu<\/strong>&nbsp;(pronounced&nbsp;<em>loot-su<\/em>&nbsp;in Maltese) these are traditional Maltese fishing boats. Brightly painted in shades of yellow, red, green and blue their bow is normally pointed with a pair of eyes. These eyes may be the modern survival of an ancient Phoenician custom. The luzzu is one of the symbols of Malta and is featured on the reverse of the older series (1979-89) of Maltese lira coins. But mostly they make for wonderful photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-2 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-426.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"337\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-426.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"4146\" class=\"wp-image-4146\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-426.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-426-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-427.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-427.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"4147\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-427.png\" data-link=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/?attachment_id=4147\" class=\"wp-image-4147\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-427.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-427-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next we visited a vineyard. The vines are grown in the traditional way as opposed to Greek vines that are twisted in a nest like shape close to the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-3 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-428.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"4148\" class=\"wp-image-4148\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-428.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-428-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-429.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"4149\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-429.png\" data-link=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/?attachment_id=4149\" class=\"wp-image-4149\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-429.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-429-300x250.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In true cruise tour fashion we were next whisked to a glass blowing factory and a pottery shop. There was nothing there that I wanted to buy although these tabletops caught my fancy. I could picture such a table by a pool in someone\u2019s garden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-430.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-430.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-430-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>But the real spectacular site was St John\u2019s cathedral and we did that on our own after leaving the group near the center of Valletta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior, in sharp contrast with the facade, is extremely ornate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-4 is-layout-flex wp-block-gallery-is-layout-flex\"><ul class=\"blocks-gallery-grid\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-431.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-431.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"4151\" class=\"wp-image-4151\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-431.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-431-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><a href=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-432.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-432.png\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"4152\" data-full-url=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-432.png\" data-link=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/?attachment_id=4152\" class=\"wp-image-4152\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-432.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-432-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/li><\/ul><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Everywhere you look there are works of art, sculptures, paintings, gold, even the floor is spectacular with inlaid marbles\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"338\" src=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-433.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4153\" srcset=\"https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-433.png 450w, https:\/\/flyingplates.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/image-433-300x225.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The Cathedral contains eight rich chapels, each of which was dedicated to the patron saint of the 8 langues (or sections) of the Knights.
