This is the latest in American moralizing reality TV: a family is assessed by a dietician who predicts illness and doom for kids whose diet is obviously not ideal. They use a computer to imagine what the kids will look like at age 40. This is supposed to scare the parents into wanting to change their ways but the most ridiculous part is that they usually look just like their parents…so what is shocking about that? Mind you I am in total agreement that these people need to make lifestyle changes…but the format is moronic. In last night’s episode we got to see a mother of two in a supermarket who says she has never set foot in the fresh fruit and vegetable section of the store. She picks up various vegetables, looking at them as if they were alien beings and wonders what they are…Can’t the woman read?
The entire format makes no sense. The dietician who looks like the wicked witch of the west, gives orders but no explanation or support, just blame and threats…These people need help…
The portrait it paints of american kids is a sad one. These children see this as a punishment. Have they never been taught about healthy eating? Don’t schools teach about food groups?
Unfortunately the program is not very useful in educating the public as it focuses more on the conflicts between the parents than on nutrition. What an irritating program!
