What can make 55,571 people gather from all over Montreal on a cold February night?
Not a hockey game, not a political rally, not a rock concert…but….
A soccer match!
Montreal’s Impact beat Mexico’s Santos Laguna 2 0 in the first game of the quarterfinal series of the CONCACAF Champions League.
What a great way to forget winter for a few hours! Soccer is relatively new to our culture but it is obviously gaining in popularity. If I was to guess at some of the reasons, I would venture that the incredible stamina of the players has got to figure somewhere up the list. The make hockey players look like sissies. The relatively low price of the tickets made it affordable for a greater number of people than most sports events and the large number of Montrealers who have European and south American origins has also contributed to this new found passion…because there was passion at that match!
