Monet in Normandy

I went to see this Monet exhibit at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh NC. I was familiar with his water lilies and all the Giverny paintings but not so much with his work in Normandy so this was an educational visit for me. Among other things, I found out that he had set up an “atelier” on a barge and would work on a dozen paintings of the same subject on any given day. Moving from one easel to the next as the day wore on and the lighting changed.
There are several boardwalk images of Sainte-Adresse, a resort area near Le Havre. Later works include Normandie’s coast line, with cliffs and rocks and storms, then a series on grainstacks and another one of the Rouen cathedral. To finish off the exhibit, like dessert after a lovely meal, there are a few Giverny paintings…
I was impressed with the number and quality of the paintings gathered for this exhibit as well as the size of the crowd. This is obviously a well marketed and popular attraction. The museum is pleasant and airy and has a nice restaurant.

The exhibit will be going to Cleveland in February after this.
