I tried another new place last night… very “In”… on St Denis street…called La Fabrique Bistrot. ( I know I know! Bistro does not take a T at the end…but that is how they write it….)
The concept is that of a central kitchen with tables all around so you can, not only watch the chefs, but talk with them and have them answer all your food questions. It is not unpleasant at all save for the smells which sometimes are a bit strong….especially that of their french fries in duck fat….
The menu is original…interesting vegetable plates and tartares as appetizers. Main courses are varied and often contain two different meats on the same plate. I had scallops and veal accras over a delicious rizotto. The scallops were fine but the accra (which is similar to a crab cake, but made with veal) was tough and dry.
I used to always order the goat cheese salad wherever I went, but lately, my test dish has changed and I have started comparing bread puddings. This one was very very good, it had a buttery taste with a hint of nutmeg, it had a nice crust… Surprisingly, it was served with a thick caramel…the taste was nice although a bit strong on the brunt sugar notes…but the texture was too thick for me. It was supposed to melt over the pudding…but it never really did….OK maybe I ate too fast for it to melt…
Overall this was a pleasant experience… one worth repeating… It s not a “grand” restaurant….it is more of a great bistro… The decor is young and simple, the service knowledgeable without being pretentious…and the food very good. They use good quality products and it shows.
