Turkey – Caravanserai

Caravanserais were along the silk road what truck stops are along our highways: a safe place to rest. They were set up about 30 km apart to allow caravans to have safe havens along the way. They were fort like stone constructions. The travelers were allowed three nights free of charge. Their animals were fed and cared for, their merchandise was unloaded and stored. There were dining halls , baths and dormitories for everyone. When the weather was warm some people chose to sleep on the rooftop terrace.

Some of them have been restored and transformed into restaurants or performance halls.
