We did indeed see lions but not just lying in the shade sleeping. We caught a group of young lions in the process of killing a water buffalo. At first we only spotted the usual females and young males under a tree. Our guide said they had killed a few days ago so they were now digesting and would not be moving much for a few days.
But we then heard a deep cry…and noticed a water buffalo pinned down by two young lions. One was biting his mouth shut while the other was ripping its belly open.
What was especially horrifying is the fact that the buffalo was still alive and fighting, trying to escape, and crying out.
Soon a third lion joined them.
He finally died…and the lions ripped him apart…
We drove by later and the big male was having his share. By the next morning the vultures were cleaning him off. All that was left was the head and the hoofs.
Not far away the lions were digesting and resting…
On the way back that night we came across the perpetrators, asleep on the road.
