Lamu

I was in Lamu last year and mentionned it again in my Zanzibar story this week. Since then, the name has been popping up everywhere.

First there was the  murder of a british man and the  kidnaping of his wife. It was quite scary but they were alone in a remote resort quite close to the Somali border, so it hapenned in the Lamu area but not on the island per se. Nonetheless, the Canadian government has started issuing warnings…

Then  there was a big write up in the papers about Kenya wanting to build a big port there, to transit oil from the middle east and goods from everyhwere. That would completely destroy  the pristine almost virginal  towns there…What would happen to the Unesco World Heritage Site title?

And this morning news of  another kidnapping, this time of a handicapped french woman who had lived there for years…

Good thing we visited last year because it does not sound like such a great travel destination right now …yet it is so beautiful…
