While I was there I read two books (always pairs for this gemini). The first one is called “Lovely bones” by Alice Sebold and the second is “The curious incident of the dog in the night-time” by Mark Haddon. They are both first person narrations and both are “told” by young teen agers.

The first one is a girl…who has been murdered, the second, a boy…who is autistic. The girl is “up above” and watching her family, friends and neighbors deal with her disappearance…The boy for his part, had found a dead dog and wants to uncover the murderer but he ends up discovering a lot more than he expected.

Both books are refreshing in their originality yet very moving because of the pain they both deal with.

I think I preferred the Dog in the night-time because it opened a door into the mind of an autistic child. It may be accurate or a total invention but to me it sounded plausible. He describes all his strange behaviours: blocking his ears, hiding, groaning, hitting…but he explains or justifies them…which I found interesting and reassuring .The book is also very creative as it includes drawings, graphs and maps as the author sees them.

I found Lovely bones a bit boring near the end…

Both books have sand between the pages now…
