I have decided to start painting again. I have chosen to renew with something I had studied briefly a few years back: illuminations. This is the art used by monks in the Middle Ages to decorate manuscripts, specifically capital letters at the top of a page. This is extremely delicate and meticulous work. It involves numerous steps and the use of unusual materials such as sanguine, egg yolks, fiel de boeuf (ox gall?), gold leaf and more. To ease my way back I did a fairly large letter, an “N”.
