I was asked for a "Grimoire" (a book of spells) cake.
As much as I dislike fondant, for this one, I had no choice, nothing else would hold its shape over sur a large surface.
I started with a rectangular cake saving the trimmings to beef up the spine of the book. Crumb coated it in beige buttercream. Rolled out brown fondant in a rectangular shape slightly larger than the cake. Applied it over the fondant. I had to prop it at various heights so it would dry in a wavy pattern to imitate old leather. I then garnished it with some gold dusted decorations and made two marbleized fondant labels.
