This was my Old Montréal weekend and I tried another restaurant that “USED” to be good, way back when. It is La Marée, a fish and seafood restaurant located on Place Jacques Cartier right in the middle of tourist territory.
There are 2 others of the same generation close by: Le St Amable and Chez Queux which were also top of the line 30 years ago. I wonder if they have all gone the way of La Marée but I don’t think I will try to find out.
We sat on the terrace. There was an army of waiters standing by the door but when we asked very simple questions about the menu (such as what is the soup of the day) noone seemed to know the answer. When I went inside looking for the washroom, there was a musty smell, the carpets were frayed, the decor needed freshening…it was not reassuring.
The food was all right, honest, nothing fancy but no horrific faux pas. This could make some people very happy, but let’s just say that I had higher expectations…and I like exceptional food…and this was not it. I won’t go back or send anyone there.
