After sailing down and around the tip of the Italian boot we headed back northwest into the Adriatic Sea. Our first port of call was Dubrovnik in Croatia.
We started with a tour of the Croatian “Riviera” and saved the walled city for last. We visited Cavtat a picturesque seashore village. The water was unbelievably clear and a lovely color.
I tiptoed into a church where a violin concert was underway. I sat down and closed my eyes to better savor the music. When I opened them again after a few minutes, I was startled to see:
I have yet to find the meaning or explanation but it seemed humorous to me…
Even if there were quite a few people strolling along the water, sitting at café terraces or leaving the church, the overall feeling was one of peace and calm…this image expresses it the best.
We drove along the coast and had some nice views of Dubrovnik as we came back.
We stopped in Ploce Square for a traditional dance performance. The costumes were all hand embroidered and very colorful. The dancing was very energetic, so much so that one poor girl stepped off the stage in a farandole. Luckily her companions instantly dragged her back up.
After the show we walked along the city walls to Pile Square. We could already see the red roofs that give Dubrovnik its pinkish glow.
This strangely shaped “loophole” (this word sounds strange to me but that is how the dictionary translates the French word “meurtrière”) in the walls caught my eye.
This is the center of activity, with churches, historic buildings, fountains, restaurants and shops.
Our guide had insisted so much on the importance of tourism yet when we wanted to visit any of those buildings they would not take Euros, nor have bank machines available. It was a disappointment but we did get into a few of them.
We visited a cloister where one of the oldest known pharmacies used to be located. It was beautiful and serene in there…
But THE thing to do in Dubrovnik is to go up and walk along the walls surrounding the city. Everywhere you look the view is breathtaking.
