After Croatia, Greece!!
Our first stop in Greece is Corfu.
This is a beautiful island and a somewhat confusing town. There is a medieval looking fortress with a Greek or roman looking temple…but of course when visiting the Mediterranean you cannot expect any place to be frozen in time with everything in the same style and age. These cities are alive and have lived through all these times; people have kept on building over and around what was already there.
The island is hilly offering spectacular views of the crystal clear ocean surrounding it.
We visited Paleokastrista and its monastery. The gardens surrounding it were so refreshing.
I though I had found a kumquat tree…but no, I was told it is some other fruit from the quat family.
This is where we saw our first “olive oil powered” silver chandeliers. They are gifts from sailors to the churches. I found them beautiful.
There were of course several icons typical of the orthodox style. This painting of St Georges was filled with symbols.
The city of Corfu reminded me of Naples: narrow streets, high buildings with clothes lines crossing between them. It is a busy and noisy and of course a bit confusing because the alphabet is not familiar.
