Karen Blixen’s house

After the elephant orphanage, I stopped at the Karen Blixen house. She is the author “Out of Africa” and that is where she lived and where the film was shot. It has some authentic pieces and some copies, some are gifts from various organizations, some are props left over from the movie. But it all helps to recreate what must have been the ambiance back then.  I was disappointed to see photos of her lover who was far from handsome compared to her husband let alone Robert Redford!! Rumor has it that she had quite a temper and would place a red or green light on her porch to warm him of her mood…

Close by is the Kazuri factory. Kazuri is a Swahili word that means “small and beautiful”. This is a factory that was started in 1975 to provide livelyhood for women in need. It had grown stradily and now employs 450 women who make, paint, fire and assemble the beads  to create lovely necklaces.
